University of Salamanca

University of Salamanca

In 1218, King Alfonso IX decreed the creation of the Universal School of Salamanca, uniting a network of schools studying the Holy Scriptures and canon law. Thus this famous university was born; the oldest in Europe, along with Sorbonne, Bologna, Oxford and Cambridge. It was here that Christopher Columbus’s project for his voyage was considered, and where, after the discovery of America, the rights of the local population were fully recognized, something unheard of in that time period. It is the first university in Europe to receive the honorary title – university.

The modern University of Salamanca has 16 schools and 10 university centers that offer more than 80 specialties.

It is said that if you want to seriously study Spanish philology or Latin America, you will not find a better place than the University of Salamanca. These departments are the best in all of Spain. It was here that Antonio Nebrija, the creator of the first grammar of the “vernacular” Spanish language, got permission to publish his work. The teachers of this same university created the tests for the DELE exams and also grade them.

The university has 64 unique Master’s programs of its own. The university’s latest innovations include a new postgraduate program, a major in East Asian studies and a formal postgraduate program in business economics.

About 30,000 students attend the University of Salamanca every year and a large proportion of them are international students.

The university buildings are both the oldest with unique architecture located in the heart of Salamanca. The modern, state-of-the-art buildings are on the university campus. The oldest buildings of the university and some of the most beautiful ones in all of Salamanca, are: Escuelas Mayores, Escuelas Menores and Hospital del Estudio. The Escuelas Mayores was built between 1411 and 1533 and the chapel and library are of great artistic interest. The classrooms in this building are the oldest in the university and bear the names of the famous people from the university: “Miguel Unamuno”, “Auditorium Fray Luis de León”, “Alfonso X Auditorium”.

The Unamuno University campus is a 15-minute walk from the centrally located Plaza Mayor. Here are the the buildings for the different schools of study, university residences, cafeteria, bars, library and sports pavilion. Students and professors leave their cars, bicycles and motorcycles in a specially equipped university parking lot.

All university students have free Internet access via Wifi, which is available in every university building (including the bars and often in the streets since the university buildings are scattered all over the city.)
